Islam IS NOT SPECIAL

I read in the paper recently that the coastal town of Warrnambool is having trouble attracting and keeping Muslims. For the records, Warrnambool has a population of around 40,000 people and is one of the few country towns that is actually growing in population.

The story I read centered around a request from one of the Muslims in the town to provide funding for a mosque to help attract and keep more Muslim people. The Muslim gentleman quoted in the article works for a meat export company as an overseer of the Halal operations. He ensures that the meat is Halal compliant to be exported to Muslim countries. He was quoted as saying that if the council failed to provide the required facilities he would probably leave the town because his religion was the most important thing to him. He also went on to say that the Muslim families had contributed a lot to the town.

There are in fact only 10 Muslim families in Warrnambool (taken from the article), so I have to question just how valuable their contribution has been. 10 families at an average of 4 people per family = 0.1% of the population.

The chap at the centre of the request even says himself that a Muslim person is not required to ensure the meat is Halal. So tell me, why should the local council fork out cash to fund a mosque? They certainly aren't shelling out ratepayers cash to help other religious faiths in the town.

The article explains that the council is trying to help the local Muslim community find a place they can use as a mosque, but alas, they are not happy with what they have been offered. I am glad to see that the council is making an effort to help accommodate their beliefs, but I really hope the council doesn't give them any money. Despite what most Muslims would have you believe (either forcefully, or with their rhetoric), Islam is not more special than the other religions, and shouldn't be treated as if it is.
